“Greek wine is, almost by definition, a very complex subject, given the number of native grape varieties, the appellations, the numerous types of climate and a vast range of winemaking philosophies. So I selected a line-up of wines trying to capture a bit of this stunning complexity. A bit of the past, a bit of the present and a bit of the future, of what I consider one of the most exciting wine producing regions of the world.

O K E A N O S R E S E R V E L I S T

Okeanos is pleased to offer a reserve list comprised of some of the finest wine makers from Greece. This selection is tailored to the discerning and adventurous wine drinker who is eager to explore the highest in quality from the ancestral home of fine wine.

Sitia 2000, Domaine Economou (Crete) $80 Gianni Economou is perhaps Greece’s finest wine maker who cut his teeth in Piedmont, the Rheinhessen, and Chateau Margaux before moving back to Crete and working with the native varietals Liatiko and Mandilaria. This wine is a vin-de-terroir masterpiece reminiscent of Barolo and Barbaresco with rose petals, dust, and dried cranberries.

Syrah 2007, Domaine Nerantzi (Macedonia) $90 Domaine Nerantzi is a new organic winery in Macedonia which makes this unbelievable Syrah from its estate fruit. Exhibits violets, sweet earth and game on the nose. Slightly sweet and brambly tannins give way to kirsch, boysenberry, black pepper and a long Amarone-like finish of plum.

Trilogia 2008, Christos Kokkalis (Ilia) $120 A nose of ground coffee, dark chocolate and slight vanilla with floral elements, blackcurrants, blueberries, and mint. Concentrated palate with a core of minerality and spice, framed by full sun-drenched blackcurrants and blueberries with floral notes, oak, bay leafs and fresh tobacco with a long finish.

Pinot Noir 2008, Rossiu di Munti, Katogi Averoff (Epirus) $80 Elegant and pure, this Pinot Noir comes from Greece’s highest elevated vineyards in the Pindus Mountains. Cherry and strawberry peak through a bright acidity and well-framed tannins. Rossiu di Munte literally means “Mountain Red” in the Vlach dialect of the Epirus region where Katogi Averoff Winery, one of the most
historical names in Greek wine finds its home.
